Interview with Toshiyuki Itahana, Plus Original Illustrations
We talked to Toshiyuki Itahana, an creative person from SQEX who provided illustrations of Terminal FANTASY mascots and characters from FINAL FANTASY CRYSTAL CHRONICLES: Ring of Fates.
Toshiyuki Itahana
Notable piece of work includes titles such as FINAL FANTASY 9, Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon, and FINAL FANTASY CRYSTAL CHRONICLES. More than recently character designer for mobile title MOBIUS FINAL FANTASY.
―You must take a lot of opportunities to draw chocobos and moogles, but what was the concept behind the FFTCG illustrations?
Itahana: I have drawn a lot of chocobos and moogles, but mainly for promotional use. I oasis't had many opportunities to draw them as standalone illustrations. They also generally appear alongside other characters; chocobos and moogles usually come as a fix. I took this opportunity of drawing them on their own to evidence the characters going most their everyday lives.
This is based on Chocobo after Chocobo'south Dungeon 2, trotting through a field wearing Shiroma's pendant.
I depicted this moogle equally if someone had happened to run across him equally he was gathering food. As you tin see, he'due south catching fish. [laughs] I know that a moogle's head is more often than not a 1:1 ratio with the balance of its body, but I thought that would make it difficult to fish... I drew him this way for a more practical depiction of a day in the life of a moogle.
This fat chocobo is taking a nap deep in a forest, complete with nutrient in hand. I worked on these but as I'd finished illustrations for the carte game Chocobo's Crystal Hunt, and I chose to become with a similar hand-drawn style. They should feel as though they're taken from a motion-picture show book. I was told to do whatever I liked with the FFTCG asking, so I tried a way that I couldn't exercise otherwise. I opted for a picture-book style because like a book, you tin hold these cards in your hands.
―So you chose a specific fashion and went with it. Was there annihilation else you were able to practise because it was an FFTCG asking?
Itahana: Mascots are ever going to be cute, only I don't experience like cute cards are particularly stiff in these games... [laughs] I recall telling the evolution squad to please brand these cards powerful! [laughs]
―How did it feel drawing characters from Final FANTASY CRYSTAL CHRONICLES: Ring of Fates [hereafter FFCC: RoF], a game released over a decade agone?
Itahana: In the original Concluding FANTASY CRYSTAL CHRONICLES [hereafter FFCC], the player was the protagonist. While each race had its diverse characteristics, in that location wasn't anything unique virtually the main graphic symbol. In FFCC: RoF, for the outset time, the protagonist was a fully developed character. The subcharacters also had a lot of personality, and then when working on the character design, I enjoyed drawing the characters as I'd imagined them to be. "This is what a sharp-tongued Lilty would expect like." For FFTCG, I focused on portraying their corresponding personalities, specially in their facial expressions.
Yuri cares securely about his twin sister, Chelinka, and is adamant to protect her, and so here he is mid-boxing. Though the Clavat are a peaceful race that detests conflict, he was forced to grow stronger at ane point during the story, which is something I've also tried to portray. I've arranged him with his back turned toward the states, something I can't practise with pieces for reference. Speaking of arrangements, I drew Yuri and Cu Chaspel as if they were a set, with their backs facing one another.
I can picture a red moon in the sky watching over them every bit they clash...but peradventure that'due south just me. [laughs]
Meeth has a sharp tongue but is adorable. Her expression portrays her cunning nature. Hither she is creating magicite, as she does in the game. The items in the picture are likewise from the game.
Chelinka is 1 of my favorite heroines, definitely in the top iii for characters I've fatigued so far. The picture is a straightforward depiction of who she is: a sweet nevertheless strong, scaredy-cat of a girl. And you tin't have FFCC without moogles.
―The style of the characters seems different than that of the mascots. Was that your original plan?
Itahana: Yes, I went heavy on the hatching [a technique used to create tonal or shading effects] to add motion and avoided using many shine lines. When I started drawing the outline, I liked the rough lines that looked like they were created by pencil, and then I decided to do that throughout the entire slice. With the chocobos and moogle, the outlines are very clear, just with the illustrations I'm currently working on, I'chiliad avoiding using outlines. I've ended up changing the style every time! If I accept the take a chance, I'd dear to do something analog, like a watercolor. One thing most FFTCG is that there's a box of text describing the actions of the card roofing role of the illustration, and then my more recent pieces work effectually the window.
―Is there anything you struggled with?
Itahana: Not really. I draw a lot of illustrations for various references with my electric current job, so I had a boom with this asking because I worked on them as if they were fan art. I like board games and card games, and then I wasn't besides concerned with the task.
―Who'south your favorite character from FFCC: RoF?
Itahana: I like them all, but if I had to choose, it would be Meeth. She'southward non an angel by any means, but is still lovable. There's a scene in the game where Meeth is home alone, and she has a alone conversation welcoming herself abode, and that's when the protagonist walks in. It's a funny scene that'south also sad... It's the only time she shows weakness. I loved the dialogue, besides.
―Which is your favorite illustration?
Itahana: The Yuri and Cu Chaspel gear up. Though information technology's only a set in my heed, I suppose. [laughs]
―I'd love to see more of what's floating effectually in your head! Are there any titles you'd like to illustrate?
Itahana: FINAL FANTASY Nine! It'd be fun taking a scissure at Tantalus. As for FFCC titles, Gnash from FFCC: RoF can talk to animals, and then it might exist fun doing a piece with him and some of the wildlife from that world. Besides, Hurdy and Gurdy from FFCC, and if we tin can include monsters, probably giant crabs. Even though I did the character design, I actually don't have many opportunities to draw the characters from MOBIUS FINAL FANTASY, then I'd like a take chances at that. This isn't technically from the FF serial, but I'd likewise like to try my hand at THE FINAL FANTASY LEGEND [the first title in the SaGa serial, rebranded as an FF title for overseas release]. [laughs]
―Information technology's exciting to hear you're currently working on more illustrations. I look forward to seeing them! Thank you for your fourth dimension!
The next interview will be with Roberto Ferrari and will feature original fine art from Last FANTASY Type-0. Don't miss it!
